Bicycling and walking - also known as active transportation - is a primary travel mode, not an optional alternative. All residents have the right to active transportation facilities that are:
Safe and stress free - i.e. free from incidences resulting in injuries or fatalities as well as designed to feel safe.
Accessible - i.e. usable, regardless of age or ability, including individuals that may require mobility devices.
Complete - i.e. bike lanes, sidewalks, and other facilities that do not abruptly begin and end, that are not temporarily or permanently obstructed, and that address the 'easy' segments as well as the more challenging locations such as intersections.
Direct - i.e. offers routes that are equal in distance - or shorter, wherever possible - between trip origins and destinations compared to a motor vehicle trip.
In addition to enhancing mobility, a well planned and executed active transportation network provides public health benefits, reduces pollutants that affect air quality and climate change, and increases economic activity.
